T-Mobile unlocks a Samsung Galaxy for free once it qualifies. On postpaid, the phone must have been active on T-Mobile for at least 40 days and be paid in full. On prepaid, it needs 365 days on the network, or more than $100 in refills in that time. Eligible phones are unlocked remotely, usually within two business days. If yours doesn’t qualify, or you bought it secondhand, an IMEI unlock is the other route.
T-Mobile’s unlock rules in 2026
T-Mobile’s device unlock policy sets a few conditions for every phone, then separate rules for postpaid and prepaid plans. Every phone must meet these three:
- It was sold by T-Mobile. A phone bought somewhere else is unlocked by whoever sold it.
- It hasn’t been reported lost, stolen or blocked.
- The account it belongs to is in good standing.
| Plan | What T-Mobile requires |
|---|---|
| Postpaid | Active on T-Mobile for at least 40 days on the line asking; any financing or lease paid in full; a zero balance if the account is closed |
| Prepaid | 365 days since activation, or more than $100 in refills on the account during that time (per line); at least 14 days since purchase |
| Any plan | No more than two unlocks per line in 12 months |
| Deployed military | Customers in good standing can ask with their overseas orders |
How the unlock reaches your Galaxy
Once a phone qualifies, T-Mobile says it unlocks it automatically and remotely within two business days, as long as the phone supports a remote unlock. You can see the unlock status in your T-Mobile account. For phones that can’t be unlocked remotely, T-Mobile sends a notification to the phone within two business days explaining the next steps.
On some Galaxy models those steps run through a device unlock app that T-Mobile installs on the phone. It needs an internet connection. If the app says the phone isn’t eligible, it is reading the same rules as above, so check the account and the dates before you try again.
Check whether your Galaxy is still locked
- 1Try another carrier’s SIMPower off, swap in a SIM from a different network and turn the phone on. A “SIM network unlock PIN” prompt means it is still locked.
- 2Look at the accountIn your T-Mobile account, the device’s unlock status shows whether T-Mobile has sent the unlock.
- 3Run an IMEI checkIf you don’t have the account, for example because you bought the phone used, a Samsung report on our IMEI check page shows the carrier on record.
When the free route is closed
The common cases: the phone isn’t paid off yet; a prepaid phone is months short of 365 days; the phone was bought secondhand and the original account holder can’t be reached; or the line has already had two unlocks this year.
For those cases we offer IMEI unlocks for T-Mobile phones. You order with the phone’s IMEI and the unlock is applied remotely. Open our T-Mobile unlock page, pick Samsung and your model, and you’ll see the live price and delivery estimate before you pay. Our Samsung page lists every Galaxy model we cover.
One thing no unlock changes: a phone reported lost or stolen stays blocked on networks that honor the report, unlocked or not. If you’re buying a used T-Mobile Galaxy, read how to check a used phone’s IMEI before you buy first. For Galaxy phones on other carriers, see our Samsung Galaxy unlock guide.
